Rio de Janeiro, simply known as Rio, is one of the largest international tourist destinations in Brazil, Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere. The city of Rio de Janeiro is the second most populous municipality in Brazil (after São Paulo), the seventh largest in the Americas and one of the largest in terms of number of inhabitants in the entire world. Cariocas are very festive and receptive and have a cultural identity marked by the diversity of the population. The city is internationally known for several cultural and scenic icons, such as the Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Corcovado hill with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the beaches in the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca, among others; the Maracanã Stadium; the bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and its arches; the Tijuca Forest considered the largest urban forest within a city; New Year’s Eve in Copacabana; the carnival; Bossa Nova and samba rythims, its food and much more. The city’s landscape was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on July 1, 2012.
